What I Want From Nintendo Switch

Mii
With the Nintendo Switch presentation coming soon, I thought I would make a list of the things I would love to see from the new platform. These aren’t predictions but they hopefully aren’t unrealistic delusions either.

Hardware

My list of hopes for the hardware are fairly modest. I just want the system to be powerful enough for 3rd parties to be able to port games to the system. It should also have decent battery life since portability is the main draw of the system.

The only specific request I have is for bluetooth audio support. Since I have switched to wireless¬†headphones a few years ago, I have no desire to go back to wired. Currently, the only systems I have that don’t support some kind of wireless headphones are the Wii U, XBox One, and 3DS. It isn’t much of a problem on home consoles as I can always play PC or Playstation 3 & 4 games during quiet hours with bluetooth or wireless gaming headphones. 3DS is the big killer since all other portable devices I have (laptops, tablets, and phone) support bluetooth headsets.

Software

  1. Virtual Console
The Switch’s Virtual Console needs to be one of the biggest selling points. Nintendo’s back catalog and IP are the reason Nintendo is still relevant in the gaming industry. They are probably the only console manufacturer that can rely solely on first-party games. Even as popular as Halo, Gears Of War, and Uncharted are, that is something I doubt Sony or Microsoft would try to pull off.I want to see Nintendo go all out on the VC offerings this time. I’m tired of being asked to buy the same dozen NES and SNES games for seemingly high asking prices (although the prices of actual carts are insane). There is no reason why the entire first party catalog of all supported systems couldn’t be released by the time the successor is announced. They also need to work with third parties to get some of their more popular games on the system.

Gameboy titles should at least have the option to play games with the color support that was offered in the Super Gameboy and the Gameboy Color / Advance firmware. Seriously, there should be an optional premade color palette instead of just Black and Yellow or Black and White.

There are rumors of GameCube virtual console. I would love to see the entire first party catalog as well as the Rogue Squadron games (hopefully including the two N64 games).

Another rumor is about virtual reality support similar to Samsung VR or Google Cardboard. Hopefully they could port the small handful of good Virtualboy games either as virtual console titles or remade as a some sort of VR demo collection.

Games I want to see on Virtual Console:

    • Earthbound / Mother 1-3 (NES, SNES, GBA)
    • Rogue Squadron 1-3, Battle For Naboo (N64)
    • Pikmin 1,2 (GameCube)
    • Yoshi’s Island (SNES)
    • Starfox (SNES)
    • Pokemon Gold, Silver, Crystal (GBC)
    • All games released on Wii, Wii U, and 3DS virtual consoles
  2. GOTY Edition Ports
It’s no secret that the Wii U didn’t sell well, which is sad since it has some very good games. A good way to get some easy games for a system early on is to port some slightly older games, package it with the all the DLC and other extras and call it a “gold edition” or “Game Of The Year edition”. This would help diminish the early droughts. Games I would love to see ported and (if applicable) repackaged with their DLC include:

    • Mario Kart 8 with all DLC
    • Hyrule Warriors with all DLC from both Wii U and 3DS version
    • Smash Bros with all characters and stages from Wii U, 3DS, and DLC
    • Fire Emblem Fates with all DLC
    • Splatoon (Remastered)
    • Mario Maker (Remastered)
  3. Returning Franchises
While it is inevitable that certain franchises are coming back: Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Kirby, Smash, and Splatoon; others may not be so fortunate. These are the franchises I would love to see return or even be resurrected from the purgatory they seem to be in.

    • Advance Wars: Not the Battalion Wars games from the GC / Wii era
    • F-Zero
    • Metroid Prime: I just pretend Federation Force ever happened
    • Mario Paint: Perfect for a system with a touch screen
    • Nintendo Remix: I hope there is a SNES Remix or Gameboy Remix in the works
    • Pikmin 4
    • Starfox: With actual controls, none of this touch / gyro garbage
    • Warioware
  4. AAA Games
The fact of the matter is that Nintendo really needs AAA games on the system. Sure, they can probably skate by with only first-party games like they have for the last few generations, but without third-parties the whole promise of a super-powered handheld that can play regular console games will be wasted. We need the CoDs, Battlefields, and Assassin’s Creeds. Plus, assuming no half-assed ports like the Wii U had: buggy, incomplete, overpriced games that don’t include all the content that the previous gen consoles got yet are somehow more expensive, I can actually see myself using the Switch as my preferred platform if only because of the portability aspect. I would love to play Batman Arkham, Deus Ex, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Star Wars, or even South Park RPGs on the go.
