2012 – The Final Countdown

It is the last day of 2011 and I am ready for it to be over. So as we teeter ever closer to a global apocalypse, I would like to give a list of some of the things I am looking forward to in the coming year. First, the thing I am most excited about is Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U. With graphics horsepower that should exceed that of the PS3 and 360 mixed with the new tablet controller should make for some great gaming possibilities. Assuming “Big N” learned their lessons from the 3DS launch and the importance of online features from the PS3 and 360, I have great hope for what is to come. I only hope it comes in black this time.

Also on the gaming front, foremost on my list is Mass Effect 3. The first was a great RPG / Shooter hybrid. The second was good but too dumbed down. I hope that the 3rd (and presumably final) installment is a return to the epic gameplay that I love. Next on my list is Retro City Rampage. It should have been released months ago, but if it is as good as it looks, it should be fucking epic! Nintendo has many key properties that are due out including Paper Mario 3DS, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, and hopefully Smash Brothers. On the PC we have Bioshock Infinite, Prey 2, Torchlight 2, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and X: Rebirth. Lastly there is Halo 4. I can’t wait to see what 343 does with this iconic franchise.

For TV, I am eagerly awaiting the return of Mad Men (which as been off since 2009) as well as my other ongoing shows Always Sunny and Louie. For Movies, I am excited about the Dark Knight Rises, which if it’s as awesome as the other Nolan Batman films, should be really good (muffled Bane or not). The Hobbit should be a great return to Peter Jacksons take on Tolkien’s Middle Earth. I am also curious about the Bourne Legacy as I like the other Bourne films but it doesn’t have Matt Damon.

Unfortunately, I am not looking forward to everything. We have another year of shitty remakes including Red Dawn, Judge Dredd, Total Recall, and another Spider-Man reboot confirmed for 2012. On top of that, a shitty Three Stooges movie, a sequel to the crappy remake of Clash Of The Titans, and a movie based on the game Battleship.

2012 is also an election year. What I can’t stand is all the pandering and disinformation, the kind of uninformed partisan bullshit that involves signs like “keep your socialist government hands off my social security and Medicare!” Since when is “intellectual”  a pejorative? I am also sick of “progressive” and “socialism” being treated as synonyms for “nazi” and “communism”. I guess it should make a good year for Bill Maher and Jon Stewart.

Lastly we have the elephant in the room, the “Mayan apocalypse”. I do not believe that the world is coming to an end as there have been lots of cultures that have failed predictions about the end of the world. I guess people lend more credence with this because the Mayans were a fairly advanced culture while also seeming exotic and mysterious. What I do worry about is that this could be a self-fufilling prophesy (being one of the few instances where a self-fufilling prophesy can make sense). Between irrational panic, religious lunatics, and terrorists, I can see someone starting some shit because it seems like a good way to gain attention or to force the Armageddon to bring about their own religion’s prophesies as we approach that “special” day.

All that aside, let us all hope that 2012 is a great year. With any luck we will all be rich, get laid and live to see 2013.
